How to Make a Potty Training Treasure Chest

You don’t have to be a craft guru or a carpentry whiz to create this potty training treasure chest. All you need are a few standard household supplies.

  1. Start with a sturdy box: a cardboard box from your most recent shoe purchase or, if you prefer, a small plastic container. Tip: Look for a box with an attached lid so that the lid will flip open and close like a real treasure chest.
  2. Cover the box with adhesive shelf-paper (plain or patterned: it’s up to you)
  3. Personalize your creation with your child’s name and some peel-and-stick stickers. Better yet, get him involved in decorating “his” treasure chest.
Filling it with treasure: Now it’s time to fill your treasure chest with inexpensive goodies that your little guy is guaranteed to love.

Ideas for What to Put In It

  • Stickers (for him to stick on his potty training sticker chart to celebrate his successes) and other mini-rewards (think tiny cars, temporary tattoos, miniature animals, a funky pair of dinosaur-print socks, and so on)
  • Storybooks, coloring books, and puzzles (to give your child something to do while he’s sitting on the potty)
  • An inexpensive musical instrument, like a harmonica or a set of bells (to keep your child entertained while he’s waiting for the magic to happen)
  • A small stuffed animal (to keep your child company while he’s on potty patrol)
  • Finger puppets (so that he can act out his own potty-inspired stories)
  • Pull-Ups® Training Pants, featuring your child’s favorite Disney® characters

How & When to Use It

Use the treasure chest to store your child’s potty gear—everything he’ll want to have on hand while he’s sitting on the potty. You’ll also want to include some special treats and treasures to reward a job well done - either a great%
